The Complete Guide to Jashn-e-Qaqlasht 2026
📅 Estimated Dates for 2026
Jashn-e-Qaqlasht is traditionally held annually in April.
While official dates can vary slightly based on the arrival of the full bloom on the plateau and coordination by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Tourism Department, multiple regional calendars list the festival within the mid-to-late April 2026 window.
Travel Tip: This festival occurs right before the popular Chilam Joshi festival in the Kalash Valleys (held in mid-May). It is possible to plan a extended journey to witness both.
What is the Qaqlasht Plateau?
It is a vast, elevated meadow located approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Chitral town, near the village of Booni. Throughout the year, it is a serene, grassy steppe. In April, following the spring rains, the entire plateau erupts into a sea of small yellow flowers, setting the stage for the festival.
🎺 What to Expect: Sports, Music, and Culture
Unlike modern, commercialized events, Qaqlasht is organized to protect and market the indigenous heritage of Northern Chitral.
1. Traditional and Modern Sports
The heartbeat of the festival is its sporting competitions, which are raw, energetic, and highly competitive.
- Freestyle Polo: Similar to Shandur, this is a fast, furious, no-holds-barred version of polo played by teams from villages across the district.
- Archery: Watch master archers display precision using traditional bows.
- Other Activities: The festival grounds also host tug-of-war, volleyball, football, cricket, and sometimes more adventurous exhibitions like rock climbing, paragliding, and zip-lining.
2. Cultural Nights & Music
As night falls over the Hindu Kush, the focus shifts to a massive communal gathering.
- Folk Music: Performances feature rare instruments such as the Chitrali sitar and various reed instruments.
- Traditional Dances: Audiences are entertained by folk dances unique to the region, such as 'chong righishi,' 'tatali wawali,' and 'mamashish.'
- Mushaira: Local poets gather for poetry recitation sessions (Mushaira) in the Khowar language.
🎒 Essential Travel Tips for Qaqlasht
Shandur requires preparation, and Qaqlasht demands similar respect for the remote terrain.
- Journey and Transport: The drive from Chitral town takes 3–4 hours. While parts are paved, a 4x4 vehicle is essential, especially for climbing onto the plateau. Be prepared for bumpy, unpaved roads.
- Camping is Mandatory: There are no hotels on the Qaqlasht Plateau. You must either travel with a tour operator that provides tents or bring your own heavy-duty camping gear. The plateau becomes a spectacular tent city.
- Pack for Cold Nights: While the days are sunny and pleasant among the yellow flowers, temperatures at this elevation drop significantly after sunset. Bring layers, thermal wear, and a very warm sleeping bag.
- Supplies: While food stalls spring up, it is wise to carry your own water filter, basic snacks, and a power bank, as electricity is not available.
